Artistic Scoring  Top

Rules that govern gymnastics scoring are made by the FIG. At major competitions, four to six judges sit at each piece of apparatus. Two judges determine the start value based on difficulties and bonus met. The other four to six judges deduct for execution and composition only. Each of the judges arrives at a score independently. The high and low scores are discarded while the remaining scores are averaged.

JUDGING CRITERIA

For each routine, the gymnast begins with less than a perfect score. For women, the competitor starts with a 9.00 while men start with an 8.60. Judges make deductions for flaws in execution and for any missing requirements in the composition of the exercise.

The judge may award bonus points, up to 1.0 for women and 1.40 for men. Thus, the perfect routine, including bonus points added, is awarded a score of 10.00.

Gymnastics skills are divided into five levels of difficulty. Levels range from "A," which is the easiest, to "E," the most difficult. Each routine must have a minimum number of parts dependent upon the level of competition.

OLYMPIC COMPETITION ORDER

The international competition order is decided by the FIG. Olympic order for women is: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. Men compete in the following order: floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar.

Level 5:
This is the beginning compulsory competitive level.  The gymnast must be at least 7 years of age, and be tested into this level by a skill evaluator.  These athletes train 12 hours per week.  The routines that they perform are very precise and each gymnast in this level train and compete the exact same routines on each event.

Level 6:
This is the next compulsory level.  The gymnasts must score at least a 31.00 all around in level 5, and show the ability to perform level 6 skills in order to qualify for this level.  These athletes also train 12 hours per week and train in conjunction with the level 5's.

Level 7:
This level bridges the gap between compulsory and optional gymnastics.  Each event has six requirements; however, additional elements may also be included.  The connections, choreography and the order of the specific requirements may be freely chosen.  The gymnasts must score at least a 31.00 all around in level 6, and show the ability to perform level 7 skills in order to qualify for this level.  These athletes train 4 hours a day 5 days a week.

Level 8:
This is the first optional level in which gymnasts must fulfill certain skill level requirements.  The connections, choreography and the order of the specific requirements may be freely chosen.  These athletes train 4 hours a day 5 days a week.

Level 9:
This is the second optional level in which gymnasts must fulfill more difficult skill level requirements.  The connections, choreography and the order of the specific requirements may be freely chosen.  These athletes train 4 hours a day 5 days a week.

Level 10:
This is the most advanced Junior Olympic level in which gymnasts must fulfill the most difficult skill level requirements.  The connections, choreography and the order of the specific requirements may be freely chosen.  These athletes train 4 hours a day 5 days a week.
